As the first part of our three-part Corona replacement shoot, we wanted to start with something simple. It shouldn't take too much time, neither in construction nor in implementation. So we decided to use screw nuts. When I hear nuts and bolts, the first thing I think of is a workshop where people work and dirt is everywhere. But our pictures should not look like that today.

Our aim is to illuminate the screw nuts with different light colors using a simple set-up on a table. For this purpose, we have set up two large plastic boxes and placed a glass plate on top. In between there is some space to illuminate the action from below and from above. For the background, we have chosen black, so that the background does not disturb the picture.

For the execution, we have chosen Speedlite flashes, because they are much smaller than the studio flashes. One flash was placed underneath the glass plate, the other one was fixed on a tripod. To make the screw nuts look really cool we used Colored foil. Two different colors, preferably complementary colors, were used to illuminate the screw nuts from below and above.

That's really all you need to consider, now it's about being a little creative and finding the best angle to take the best pictures. Depending on the size of the screw nuts, more or less distance is needed to take pictures. But if you decide to use small screw nuts you might need a macro lens to fill in a picture with the nuts.

What do you think of our creations with screw nuts? Don't forget to leave a comment.
